How to compute the measurements for adding in depth with a boxed bottom

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

If you are starting from scratch with a desired width and height and you want to make yourself a template, the following will help you to add the depth to any tote or pouch/clutch.

Desired depth x .5. That amount is then added to each side for the width. That desired depth is then added to the finished bag width.

Desired depth x .5. That amount is then added to the bottom only for the height. This amount is then added to the desired finished bag height.

Seam allowance x 2: That amount is added to the both the desired width and the desired height measurement.

For Example: Desired Finished Bag Size: 8" wide X 9" high X 3" deep with a 3/8" SA

Using Decimals: Depth: 3" deep X .5 = 1.5 inches or 1 1/2"

The Boxed Corner will be cut at 1.5" X 1.5"

Width: 8" (width) + 3"(depth) = 11" PLUS SA .375 + .375 = 11.75" wide

Height: 9" (height) + 1.5" (depth) = 10.5" PLUS .SA 375 + .375 = 11.25" high

Using Fractions:

Depth 3" deep X 1/2 = 1 1/2"

The Boxed Corner will be cut at 1 1/2" X 1 1/2"

Width: 8" + 3" = 11 PLUS 3/8" + 3/8" = 11 3/4" wide

Height: 9" + 1 1/2" = 10 1/2" PLUS 3/8" + 3/8" = 11 1/4"
